This jazz history is great value and well put together. It presents many pleasant surprises I found the juxtaposition of many different facets of jazz music together lead to a deeper appreciation of the genre. I have minor criticisms about the transfer quality mostly good, but inconsistent, and that it would have been nice to have liner notes that where specific to the content, but otherwise highly recommended. Recording Date. Submit Corrections. Various Artists. The third volume zeroes in on the years 1934-1945, and is therefore primarily concerned with the transitional phenomenon usually referred to as Swing-to-Bop. The lineup is endlessly fascinating, as Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Albert Nicholas, and Mezz Mezzrow alternate with Lil Diamonds Hardaway and Old Ced Odom Charlie Christian and Fred Astaire Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Machito's Afro-Cuban Salseros, and Raymond Scott.
