Album

Chant is a compilation album of Gregorian chant, performed by the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain. The performances were recorded perhaps as early as the 1970s, either in the province of Burgos or in Madrid, the Spanish capital. The music did not sell significantly until it was re-released by Angel in 1994 when it was strongly marketed as an antidote to the stress of modern life. When Chant was released by Angel in 1994, it transcended the recording industry's categories and became a global crossover sensation, making the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos international stars. The album itself was not necessarily the best recording of Gregorian chants, for the monks' singing is sometimes ragged on beginnings of phrases, and the articulation of consonants is a bit sloppy, though this matters little in the highly resonant acoustic of the Teatro Real in Madrid, which covers a multitude of vocal errors. Most people will purchase an album of chant for its soothing effect on the mind. If this is your motivation, the Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos will not disappoint. Third, it provides an otherworldly sound world that you want to escape to, hovering in the heavens with floating bricks. Not sure many will be turned on by this sub-genre for its musical merits alone, but there are 9 billion people in this world, and certainly at least some will find their base in the ethereal landscape of the monks.
