This was my first exposure to Terry Lavitz' music, and my initial impression is that it sounds a lot like mid to late 80's fusion a la Pat Metheny or Kazumi Watanabe (much closer in style to the former than the latter). While this type of music doesn't serve well for "foreground" listening, one cannot deny that it is highly accomplished and technically excellent. On this debut LP, Lavitz is joined by a renowned cast of players including Jeff Berlin, Steve Morse, and Steve Smith, performing tracks that range from intriguing to fairly average for the territory. Highlights are "Between Coming and Going," "Sparkle Plenty," "Baby Talk," and "Crystal." Side one starts off strong, but then flags a bit with the meandering third track, which leads into the more soulful "I'm Callin' You." Side two likewise begins in strong fashion then slows down for two short, less impressive middle tracks, before ending on the Metheny-esque "Crystal," which could have come straight out of the ECM catalog. The U.S. pressing of this album sounds incredible, maybe one of the best I've ever heard, with a huge soundstage and dead silent grooves. Jazz fusion fans should be pleased, and I would give it three out of five stars.
