Br'er Rabbit ˈbrɛər Brother Rabbit, also spelled Bre'r Rabbit or Brer Rabbit, is a central figure as Uncle Remus tells stories of the Southern United States. He is a trickster who succeeds by his wits rather than by brawn, provoking authority figures and bending social mores as he sees fit. The character was first recorded by Joel Chandler Harris in the 19th century, and later The Walt Disney Company adapted it for its 1946 animated motion picture Song of the South. Brer Rabbit and His Tricks, by Ennis Rees, is a modem classic based on southern folklore. Me best-known of the three stories, Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby, was first published more than a century ago by Joel Chandler Harris in his Uncle Remus sketches. That, and other versions of the Bret Rabbit stories, were written in difficult-to-understand dialect and are little read today, according to Rees. A reading of one of my favorite childhood books: Brer Rabbit & His Tricks. The book is poetic reimagining of three of the famous Brer Rabbit folktales, written in rhyme by Ennis Rees and beautifully illustrated by the great Edward Gorey.
