“WHEN DISTAL DROPS BY YOUR TOWN, DROP EVERYTHING AND SEE HIM. HE’S A REVELATION TO ANYONE ON THE DANCEFLOOR” – URB.COM
Sinden strikes again! The unstoppable juggernaut that is Grizzly, released a fresh EP from new talent Distal in late September 2011.
"I was in Austin, Texas when producer/DJ Dubbel Dutch played me Distal's ‘Boss Of The South’ after our Ustream,” Sinden recalls. “On that US tour I was exposed to a lot of great music, but this was an absolute beast – it stood head and shoulders above everything I heard and it was really produced, totally original, gangster but playful, energetic with that Southern rap attitude – a rolling cult rap and bass anthem. I had to find the Atlanta-based boss of the South behind it!”
A former music student who bagged a Psychology degree along the way, specialising in auditory synesthesia, Distal aka Michael Rathburn’s debut 12” was released by the legendary Soul Jazz Records alongside contemporaries Ramadanman, Mala and Coki, to worldwide support. Releases on Surefire and his own Embassy Recordings followed, endorsed by a who’s-who of scene leaders including Appleblim, Ben UFO, Julio Bashmore and Breakage.
For Sinden, second track ‘Coke Bottle’ really clinched the deal. “It’s a great partner for 'Boss' slotting somewhere between techno, juke and rap with sinister synth lines.” It wouldn’t be a Grizzly release without some equally killer, specially commissioned remixes. We’ll let the Boss Of The Label talk you through them:
"DFA & Soul Jazz producer Capracara took it back with a Kerri Chandler / Masters At Work style bumping classic house vibe. I’m a big fan of what he's doing. We’ve then got Well Rounded's Wheez-ie on a fast footwork version. A month later he delivered a second with fun piano stabs that trumped the first version even. I remixed, lastly, turning in something moody and techy – my deepest remix yet.”
